Afghanistan and Turkmenistan: neighbors with great potentials

On 05th February 2016, H.E. Dr. Suraya DALIL, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Government of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to the United Nations met her counterpart H.E. Mr. Atageldi HALJANDOV, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Turkmenistan at the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan in Geneva.

Both Ambassadors talked about the historical and cultural relations between the two countries by emphasizing on the good relations and close cooperation that is classified as a good example of regional cooperation. Ambassador Dalil stated that Turkmenistan is a good neighbour and a potential transit and economic partner of Afghanistan has a potential to contribute to security, stability and peace in the region.

Both Ambassadors underlined the importance of expanding the partnership in the sphere of constructing a 1,800km long pipeline of natural gas called Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan and India (TAPI) that was signed on 14th of December 2015. Ambassador Dalil added that as Representative of our respective countries, it is a great pleasure for us that both governments have a strong will in becoming a role model for peace, cooperation, coexistence and good neighborly relations in the region.

At the Geneva level, both Ambassadors agreed upon the necessity of further deepening the corporation in all UN mechanism and partnership in economic, trade, energy, transport, sciences and technology, culture and humanitarian spheres.
