Afghanistan Presents its first report to CEDAW

Afghanistan presented its first report to the Committee on the Elimination of Discriminations Against Women on the 10th of July 2013.
The Convention on the Elimination of Discriminations Against Women (CEDAW) adopted in 1979 by the UN General Assembly, is often described as an international bill of rights for women, which entered into force on 3rd September 1981.
The implementation of CEDAW is monitored by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. State parties must submit a report to the committee every four years, setting out how they are implementing the convention.
Afghanistan signed the convention on 14th August 1980, and acceded to the convention on 4th April 2003. The first report of Afghanistan which was combined of its initial and second periodic report highlighted the achievements of Afghanistan during the last decade in promoting and protecting women's rights and underlined the eras for the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan that are put in place for the improvement of women's conditions in the country. Moreover, it explained the ongoing works and plans of revising Afghanistan law’s to make them consistent with the CEDAW.
The report was presented by a high level delegation headed by Dr. Mohammad Qasem Hashemzai, Senior advisor to the Ministry of Justice and comprised of two deputy ministers from ministry of Women Affairs and ministry of labor, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disableds, Administrative Director General of the Judiciary Supreme Court, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to UN and other International Organizations in Geneva, General Director of Human Rights and women international Affairs of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Director of Plan and Policy Department of Ministry of Education, Reporting Desk Officer of Human Rights and Women International Affairs of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Second Secretary and Third Secretary of Permanent Mission of Afghanistan in Geneva.
