Submission of Afghanistan’s WTO accession to the Director General of WTO

Afghanistan WTO’s accession package finally ratified by the National Assembly and has been signed by His Excellency President Ashraf Ghani. Dr. Suraya Dalil, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations and International Organizations in Geneva officially submitted this document today to His Excellency Mr. Roberto Azevêdo, the Director General of WTO.

Afghanistan accession protocol was approved in December 2015 at the WTO Ministerial Conference in Nairobi and the country was given a six months timeframe to ratify the accession package through the National Assembly and the Head of State.

Ambassador Dalil thanked the WTO for its support to Afghanistan and requested the Director General of WTO for continued support during post-accession period including trade related development assistance. She also conveyed His Excellency President Ghani’s invitation to the Director General for a visit to Afghanistan.

Afghanistan membership to WTO will allow the country to enter a rule-based multilateral trade system, and in long-run it enhances the country’s vision for improved trade, transit and economic growth.

Afghanistan’s peace and stability is critical for the regional peace allowing a better trade and economic return for Afghanistan and its neighbors.
